Welcome to the website for the parish of Sutton Bonington, located in the

East Midlands, on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and

Derbyshire

The parish of Sutton Bonington lies in the valley of the River Soar. It
covers some 2200 acres and includes the hamlet of Zouch. Although the
postal address is Loughborough, Leicestershire, the village is actually in
the south west corner of Nottinghamshire, the bridge over the Soar at
Zouch, known as County Bridge, forms the boundary with Leicestershire.
The population is about 1,600, not including the students at the University
of Nottingham Faulty of Agricultural, Food Sciences and Veterinary
Science, Sutton Bonington Campus, who bring the figure to over 2,000
in term time.

In medieval times, Sutton and Bonington were two settlements, which
gradually grew together to make one long, narrow village; development to
the west and east being discouraged by the flood plain of the river
and the railway line respectively. Zouch is a small settlement, which
developed when the canal was cut in the 18th century, though there is
evidence that here was a mill on the river 600 years previously.

Increasing numbers of visitors come to Sutton Bonington to enjoy the
historic buildings, the River Soar for boating and fishing, the pleasant walks
and the Caravan Club sites. The international reputation of the University
also attracts visitors from all over the world.
